Start Travelog
it's 6:40am and I'm at SFO awaiting my first flight to take me on the first leg of what could be a very interesting journey.
I'm going to New Haven, CT to visit Yale and do a second interview with the Yale School of Drama to determine if the Staff Electrician job they have available is right for me. The job would be a change of pace and responsibility for me as a major portion of the job requires supervising graduate students as they work as Master Electricians on shows. I'd be working on a wide variety of shows, from student productions, to nationally known Yale Rep shows, to limited engagements, to who knows what. I will be working in a university environment, with all the benefits and headaches that brings. And i will be a the heart of the American Theater, nurturing future movers and shakers of the theater community.
Yale graduates work in every major theater company across the nation and wield a strong influence in every aspect. I've worked with a number of "Yalies" while working at Cal Shakes and Berkeley Rep. I do admire the work they do and I like the idea that little o' me could be a part of the mold.
i'm also very scared of taking even this step. Taking this job would mean relocating to the East Coast, a daunting prospect for this West coast raised girl who has only gone East as far as Chicago. Relocating means leaving my rent-controlled apartment that's convienent to so much in the Bay Area. Relocating means leaving my network of friends and co-workers nurtured for so long. Relocating means starting fresh in a town where the only person I know is a grad student spending this semester away. Relocating means uprooting my husband from 16 years in the Bay Area. Relocating means leaving my mother behind in the Bay Area as I just can't deal with bringing her and all her "baggage" along.
Taking this step brings me much closer to all these fears.
Yale is paying for this trip. I would have been willing to do this on my own 'cause the prospect of taking this job sight unseen is too much.
This reminds me of my first Summer Search trip, traveling to Australia for 4 weeks with an All-American softball team thru Sports for Understanding. It was the first time on a plane for me, first time away from home for more than a week, first time going anyway farther away than Disneyland (as i write this, i look up and see an Alaska plane going by - painted blue and says "follow me to Disneyland" with Tink flying across - I must be doing the right thing blogging this). I was so eager to go, to get away from life with my mom for a while, to see somewhere else, to have some independance. And i would get to come back and be noticed and admired for having done such an exotic adventure.
Now I'm being noticed by my co-workers and bosses. Most are positive about this opportunity. Jared, the PM at Cal Shakes, doesn't want to lose me as I make the electrics department "the only dept I don't worry about". They are excited and happy for me and wish me luck. They'll all miss me. And I'll miss them.
And Jamie's very excited about it all. Jamie is independant enough to be self-sufficient and he's reassured me he'll do fine establishing a life for himself. He's very excited about following me and the relocation. As he said "If I have to go thru the Napa Valley again (for vacation) I'll puke".
