Back in the Urban Environs
Pictured is the Yale Rep version of the Eurydice set, previously produced at Berkeley Rep several years ago. This was taken halfway during the load in, so the chandeliers, the sprinkler pipes, the cornice with neon and the "elevator" aren't fully in yet. Russell Champa is returning as the Lighting Designer and we've been very happy to see each other. But he is still weirded out by my schedule which doesn't require me to stay thru all of tech. I'm looking forward to seeing this show again, it's one of my favorites. It's been strange, readjusting to New Haven life. Our new apartment is another block closer to the "ghetto" but we are right next to a public school and between a Yale security substation and a New Haven Police substation, so we should be secure here. We're still unpacking boxes and determining what we need here. We acquired a desk and a kitchen block from the previous tenants, a bed less than a year old from a grad student that's finally done, and are pondering a tv purchase. We're spending all this money, and I still haven't worked a full week yet. It's now back to quick trips on freeways to places we vaguely remember how to get to, eating out a lot, dealing with lots of traffic, and feeling lonely because I have very few peers here. I can and have made friends with some of the grad students, but I still remember they are students and they have busier and more exhausting schedules than I do. I'm strongly considering putting out my resume to the local IATSE and theater companies and drumming up a wider variety of work and hopefully meet more pals. This 37.5 hour work week just feels like nothing compared to my old freelance schedule during which I could work for 2 or 3 theaters in a day easy.
But we're also looking forward to a New England fall, with hopes of doing a long foliage viewing drive; watching the snow fall; nippy days; and more trips to local landmarks.
At least I'll always have the pictures and the memories of a summer in the Berkshires!
