Arrival

Arrival - 9:20p EST

I'm at a local coffee shop in New Haven "Koffee Too". Every table here has people at it, online, studying, chatting; all the usual college town things.
Students here are young and the typical mix of race at a top school, including Asian, international, all-american. Even looking outside i'm reminded so much of Berkeley, except there's no homeless just sitting on the street. I did see a punk/alternative type walk in with a puppy in hand but he was looking for someone who worked here, chatted, and left.
But instead of "Fuck Stanfurd" shirts, there's "Huck Hruvard" shirts.
And you can't even turn around without staring at a Thai food restaurant. Really.

So much brick and Architecture around. You could never have this much brick in California. And all the little details on the buildings! I'll try and get some pics tomorrow in the sunlight. Students here live in "colleges" and those buildings look so much cooler than the Berkeley dorms.

My room at the Colony overlooks one of the three theater spaces I would be working at here - 1156 Chapel (doesn't really have a name yet-any donors out there?) It looks like one of those building built in the 70's with a fully glass front wall and the biggest, most dominant wheelchair ramp meandering across the front entrance; not an encouraging sight. I've walked by the other two spaces too, the Chapel which is on the corner, and University Theater, which also houses all the offices and where my morning interview and tour will begin.

I've dropped an email to the one design instructor i know here, Lighting Designer Steven Strawbridge, with whom I've worked on two shows at Cal Shakes. Hopefully he'll have time to see me while I'm here. School just started last Monday so it might be a challenge.

To publish these entries I had to visit several coffee shops in the area, trying to find a decent free wi-fi that wasn't slower than molasses. i found a late nite bookstore and cafe that serves you at the table, making the wi-fi "free" with purchase. Ah well, at least I'm fed.

Wish me luck tomorrow.
