Our new apartment

On Monday 10/10 we signed a lease on a newly refurbished apartment close to Linda's work. It has 2 good-sized bedrooms plus study, large kitchen, nicely tiled bathroom, and living room with bay window and non-functioning tiled fireplace. It takes up the entire 2nd floor of a 3-family home and is even bigger than our last place but is only $1000/month, plus standard utilities (we got a steal since all students have found apartments already).

All the rooms except the kitchen and bathroom have hardwood floors. We have parking in a lot behind the house, and laundry available in the basement of the house next door, which is part of the same property. The manager's office is right next to the laundry. We have gas heat thru forced air vents at the top of each room. Every room has a ceiling fan to keep the hot air circulating. As part of the refurbishment, the hardwood floors have all been redone, all new appliances installed in the kitchen, bath fixtures installed and all the walls repainted a pale yellow. The study has a hardwood floor installed on top of the existing floor to even it out. Our favorite feature is the second bedroom has a closet that contains stairs going into the back wall.

There are plenty of new outlets in every room, but the breakers are located in the basement, which has been converted into another apartment. So, heaven-forbid, we pop a breaker, we have to call the office, who then calls the basement apartment to flip the breaker for us.

Jamie's been busy setting up the utilities for the apartment, and today he'll be securing the permit and arranging for the moving trailer to be delivered. We're hoping the rain we've had all week will let up by the weekend.

Once we're moved in, we'll have a guest room available for anyone visiting here.

Sheba's been exploring things slowly. Every time she hears a new noise that threatens to enter the apartment, she runs under the blankets or into a closet. She doesn't like hearing her miaows in empty rooms. And she can't sit still for very long because there's always something new to see, especially out the windows. She misses being able to perch on the windowsill, since these are so small. But she can stand to look out for a little bit.

It's hard to believe this place is now home. I still feel out of place and have been very tired every day. Hopefully after a month I'll feel better about it all, but right now I feel like Sheba, always on edge 'cause there's too many new things to deal with.

Next post: First days on the job.

L & J--(hey, that sounds familiar...)

Congrats on landing in what sounds like a real New Haven of funky charm. I hope you'll be very happy there. Most of all I hope you can set the moving process to rest while you focus on the reason you undertook the move.

My thoughts are w/ you all and I bet Sheba will relax as you settle in.

Cheers--Lydia

Hey Linda,
Congratulations on finding what sounds like a beautiful apartment and on the new job. I hope all is going well and that you're enjoying the East Coast. I hope that finishing up the moving will help ease your worries and that you'll be able to focus fully on the job and all the wonderful new things you'll have to explore.
Also they make window perchs and hammocks for cats. My boss has a cat hammock that mounts to the window and his kitties love it. I don't know if any of them would fit your window, but thought I'd mention it.
